Battery health, warranties, and long-term care

The battery is the heart of an EV. Here is how it ages and what everyday habits can help it last.

What battery degradation means

Over time, every lithium-ion battery gradually holds a little less energy than when it was new. This is called degradation and it shows up as slightly less range.

Degradation is usually gradual. Many manufacturers design packs to retain most of their capacity for many years of normal driving.

Habits that are gentle on your battery

  • Use a daily charge limit that your vehicle maker recommends, often below 100% for everyday driving.
  • Save full charges for longer trips and start driving soon after reaching 100%.
  • Avoid leaving the car at a very low state of charge for long periods.
  • Use DC fast charging when you need it, and rely on Level 2 charging for routine top-ups.
  • Park in shade or a garage during extreme heat when you can.

Temperature and your battery

Cold weather temporarily reduces range because the battery and cabin need energy to stay warm. Preconditioning while plugged in can help.

High heat over long periods can speed up aging. Most EVs include thermal management systems to protect the pack.

How battery warranties generally work

Many EV makers offer a separate battery warranty that covers the pack for a set number of years or miles, and often guarantees a minimum capacity. Terms vary by manufacturer, so always read your own warranty documents.
